Grade Two | YMOH Curriculum
The YMOH curriculum provides Islamic Studies, Arabic Studies and Quran, equal status and are considered compulsory. Science and Social Studies have also been introduced as cross curricular subjects to develop essential knowledge, skills and practices.
The program equips students with skills, knowledge, abilities, and understanding that are required in each level. The program also critically reviews student’s performance through a number of assessment tools including weekly homework assignments, monthly tests, projects, and assessments.
English Language Arts
The goal of YMOH literacy program is to incorporate our inquiry–based philosophy to create independent, critical, and ardent life–long readers and writers. To achieve this, the program is based on a balanced–literacy approach in which writing, reading, speaking, and listening enables students to develop needed skills and understandings that will serve them in all academic areas.
Grade Two students will learn a repertoire of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, appreciate, and respond to a comprehensive range of texts. While they are expected to listen and speak English fluently, second grade students will apply a couple of strategies to expand their knowledge of words and meanings to increase vocabulary and demonstrate thinking skills.
Second grade English Language Art is designed to teach students the use of oral and written language that follows the accepted conventions of the English language for self–expression and description of artistic creations as speakers and writers of the language. Our commitments to extended periods of time for reading and writing instruction allow them to learn comprehension and/or critical literacy and will become familiar with words and concepts in a text to construct appropriate meanings.
Areas of study include:Phonics: Phonics is taught in the first semester as a specialized skill linked to spelling and vocabulary, language arts and writing.
In Grade Two students will continue to learn the sounds of the English alphabets with more emphasis on new vocabulary and sounds (phonemes). During the learning process they will demonstrate the ability to hear, identify, and form words using consonants clusters, short and long vowels, diphthongs, digraphs(forming new sounds), with r controlled vowels, hard and soft c, hard and soft g words and variant vowel sounds. They will also learn that syllables are formed with 2, 3 or 4 sounds grouped together. they will also learn rhymes.
Students will also learn to make simple sentences using new vocabulary learnt.
Spelling: Students will expand upon their basic skills of forming words using the alphabetic codes, short and long vowels, digraphs, final e, silent b, g, k, w, words with r controlled vowels, compound words, antonyms and synonyms, homophones base words, prefixes and suffixes and form plural and past tense words linked to language arts and reading.
Vocabulary: Students will expand their vocabulary from a range of texts and literature sourced from Islamic and selected reading from international curriculums such as Treasures - Macmillan/McGraw-Hill.
Language Arts: Students will improve their ability to write simple and complete statements, question and sentences using exclamation marks. They will also learn subject and predicate, inflectional endings, 8 parts of speech and review grammar.
Grammar and Mechanics: Students will learn the parts of speech – common nouns; proper nouns, pronouns, possessive nouns, verbs; irregular verbs, present and past tense verbs, adjectives and adverbs, contractions, apostrophes, capitalization and punctuation, and other skills appropriate to their level.
Reading: Students will have access to a variety of reading material online via Raz–Kids and YMOH’s in-house reading room.
Students will be able to read independent texts regularly to gain fluency, build their vocabulary and develop enhanced writing skills. The story elements will include, retell, make predictions, ask and answer questions, character, setting, plot, making inferences, cause and effect, role playing, sequencing, author’s purpose, summarize and connect to prior knowledge.
Writing: Students will be able to creatively express themselves, communicate ideas, clarify their thinking, and understand new information through writing at a very young age. To foster good writing skills, the curriculum includes a variety of topics such as descriptive, persuasive, personal, and informational writing skills. Students will also be able to write diary and journal entries.
YMOH mathematics program aims to incorporate unrivaled inquiry–based philosophy to breed independent learners who are not only problem solvers, but confident risk–takers. We understand that educational excellence is only achieved when content is sequenced, applicable to students’ interests and needs, and applied to solving real problems.
Mathematics and problem–solving skills are in leaps and bounds becoming more valued as we move from an industrial to an informational society. Due to this, mathematics literacy has become increasingly essential. Making connections between mathematical study and daily life, business, government, industry, and environmental thinking is important. The YMOH mathematics curriculum aims to support and promote the understanding that mathematics is a way of learning about our world, part of our daily lives, both quantitative and geometric in nature.
It includes varieties of instructional activities, learning resources, and assessment strategies, meant to elevate the meaningful engagement of mathematics learners. It is created to be used as an aid to help students gain the prescribed outcomes and achievement indicators in their grade level mathematics.
For example, the Second Grade level math lessons are meant to help the students understand mathematical concepts of number recognition, addition, subtraction, shapes, measurement, time and money. The lessons gives special significance to providing grade appropriate mathematical and algebraic materials and problems from everyday life that students will interpret and solve to help sharpen their mathematical and algebraic skills.
Areas of study include:
Number and Operations: This section focuses on counting and number patterns up to 100; skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s, 10s; comparing and ordering numbers; learning the names of numbers; and understanding the number line and word problems up to 1000. Other key topics include addition and subtraction of between 2 to 3 digits; fractions, division, and multiplication of numbers; place value; algebra; recognizing even and odd numbers; as well as learning estimating and rounding.
Measurement: This section will aid in teaching students the use of measurement techniques and tools. Students will be able to select and independently use appropriate measurement tools, identify and select appropriate units of measurement for length, volume (capacity), weight and time.
Geometry and Spatial Sense: Here, students will learn characters and properties of two dimensional shapes and three dimensional shapes; identify, describe, compare, and sort three–dimensional shapes(i.e., cubes, spheres, prisms, cones, cylinders and pyramids) according to the shapes or the numbers of faces, edges, or vertices; point-out spatial relationships, transformation and symmetry.
Mathematical Process: This section will help teach students identify fractions and use of money in real life scenarios. Student will also learn to compare money and value, tell time, read schedules and enhance problem solving skills.
Patterning and Algebra: Students will learn how to continue number and shape patterns.They will determine the missing numbers in equations involving addition and subtraction.
Data Analysis: Students will learn to collect data and organize them in charts, picture graphs and bar graphs. Through this section, students will be able to read, interpret and make comparisons and predictions from data represented in charts, line plots, picture graphs and bar graphs. They will be able to read and construct simple timelines to sequence events; describe and compare categories of data represented in a chart or graph, and make statements about the data as a whole.
Math Vocabulary: Student will also learn math vocabulary for each unit.
Science is a fascinating subject which does not only arouse curiosity in young learners but helps them better understand Allah’s Signs around them. Allah Almighty in His Holy Book, says “Praise be unto Allah! He will show you His Signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not heedless of anything you do” [Surah An Naml, Verse 93].
Grade Two science lessons will be project–based for students so as to enable them to carry out research on topics covered in the classroom through recommended resources. The course will help them develop the basic knowledge of living and non–living things –plant and animals, earth and land forms –rocks and soil, water, weather and seasons, and human body. As well as observing patterns of growth and changes in living things, they will be able to describe patterns and make predictions. They will explore the use of resources from within the earth, and will be able to classify plants and animals while enhancing their understanding of their surrounding environment.
Earth and Space Science: Students will learn about layers of the earth and land forms, the solar system, phases of the moon, habitats, weather, water cycle and change of seasons. Using the skills, processes, and attitudes of science, they will develop an understanding of the processes, forces, and dynamic life–supporting qualities of the earth.
Life Science (Health and Fitness): Students will learn about human body –growing and caring for human body, food pyramids and food for fitness. They will learn about plants, identify parts of plants –flower, photosynthesis, seed dispersal and life cycle. They will also learn about classification of plants and animals. They will extend their understanding of the living world and their place within it through the skills, processes, and attitudes of science.
Environmental Science: With respect to health and fitness, students will learn about living and non–living things –rocks and soil, air and water. They will be introduced to basic experiments to help them explore and develop a thorough understanding of the various processes in nature. Through the skills, processes, and attitudes of science, they will enhance their understanding of their surrounding environment.
Second grade students will be introduced to communities and the Muslims world across the globe. They will become aware of their Islamic heritage as they discover stories of their local community's past and present. They will explore ways in which people interact with the natural environment and come to understand the nature of their communities. Students will enhance their awareness of the Islamic lifestyle and geographic diversity of their country through reading the book titled “Muslims in the Community” which contains varieties of Muslim lifestyles, cultures and geographies from around the world. As well as allowing them to develop geographical ideas and skills, this exploration will enable them discover the diversity and commonalities that link Islamic communities.
Grade Two students will study a course comprising of the six units: Aqeedah, Fiqh, Seerah, Tafsir, Hadith, Character Education and Tajweed.
Aqeedah (Tawheed): Students will learn about the Three Principles and The Five Pillars of Islam and Six Pillars of Eemaan (faith).
Seerah: Students will carry out a study of the Arab world, the pre-Islamic period, birth and life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his early Mekkan period, and the companions who recorded the Quran (Al Quraa).
From the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) they will learn about:
- The birth of the Prophet (story of the Year of the Elephant)
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a Shepherd
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): the Truthful and the Trustworthy
- The Revelation
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his household
- The Year of Grief
- Al-Isra' and Al-Mi'raj
- The First Migration to Abyssinia (Ethiopia)
Sahabah Series:In this series, students will study about the ten Companions who wrote down the Quran ( Abdullah ibn Masood, Ubai Ibn Ka'ab, Zayed Ibn Thabit, Abdullah ibn Al Zubair, Mu’ad Ibn Jabal, Arqam bin Abi al Arqam, Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas, Hanzalah bin ar Rabee'I, Az Zubaur bin al Awwam and Abdullah bin Arqam (r.a).
(According to authentic sources there were twenty nine scribes, the most renowned among whom were the four Caliphs: Abu Bakr Siddiqi, Umar ibn Al Khattab, Uthman ibn Affawan, Ali ibn Abi Thalib. Other companions included Aban bin Saeed bin al Aase,Khalid bin sa'eed bin al Aase, Khalid bin al Walid, Abdullah bin Sa'ad bin abi as Sarh, Amir bin Fuhairah, Abdullah bin Zaid bin Abdu Rabbihi, Al Aala'a bin al Hadrami, Muhammed biin Maslamah bin Jurais, Mu'awiyyah bin abi Sufyan, Al Mughirah bin Shu'bah (r.a). (Ref. Ibn Katheer in his book ' Al bidayah wan Nihayaah'))
Tafseer: Students will continue learning Tafsir of Juz Amma .
Fiqh: Dua before Wudhu, Salah, Takbeer, Tashahud, and others related to Salah are to be learned by the students. Istanjaa and Istajmaar, attributes of wudhu, Dua Istafaah will also be included in the course.
Character Education: Adab is integrated into the entire program. Students will study the Sunnah of the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) starting with Ikhlas, good intention, saying Bismillah, praising Allah and memorizing a list of supplications each year (Please refer to the YMOH Supplication book).
Hadith: In Grade Two, students will learn the meaning and benefits of a selected group of hadith in English with Arabic text and authentic references. They will briefly learn about the biography of the narrator of the hadith and also the meaning and an explanation of the Arabic terms in order to apply their values in their daily lives.
Explanation and benefits:
1. Brotherhood and the love of God: Narrated Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself." [Bukhari and Muslim (p. 26, No. 13, Sahih Muslim p. 50, No. 45]
2. Mercy: Narrated Jarir bin ‘Abdullah: Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to mankind.” [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 93, Number 473]
3. Good character (akhlaq): Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) never used bad language neither a 'Fahish' nor a ‘Mutafahish.’ He used to say, 'The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character.' [Sahih Bukhari, Virtues and Merits of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, Volume 4, Book 56, Number 759]
4. Co-operation: Narrated Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said, "The relationship of the believer with another believer is like (the bricks of) a building, each strengthens the other.'' He (peace and blessings be upon him) illustrated this by interlacing the fingers of both his hands [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
Quran with Tajweed
Students will continue Al Qaida Al Nooraniya (Part II) that focuses on pronunciation based on rules. In this level, we will introduce seven units of tajweed rules: (1) Detailed study of the characteristics of letters (2) The Two Alike, The Two Similar, The Two Close, and The Two Far (3) Rules of Meem Sakinah (4) Tarqeeq and Tafkheem (5) Ranks of Ghunnah (6) Rules of Laam Al Sakinah (7) Al Waqf wal Ibtidah and introduction to Madd and selected duas appropriate to the level.
Students will also review and memorize Juz Amma while applying tajweed rules to their new reading/chapters.
Second Grade students will continue to work with the Logati text books. The lessons will cover Arabic reading, writing, grammar and comprehension as a first language. Quiz taking and tests would also be applicable as in other subjects.
The first term consists of reading comprehensions on topics such as : My relative, My friends and neighbors, etc. and second term covers lessons on: I love my country, plants and manners of visiting. The prophet is my example and means of communication etc …
Reading: The students will read texts, then revise , analyze and observe the difference between long and short vowels , the different kinds of Tanween (تنوين), shaddah ( الشَّدَّة )and the difference between ي\ى and \ ـه \ ـة , all the kinds of Hamza ( همزة الوصل والقطع والاسم الممدود ) , read short poems and some verses from the Holy Quran related to the topics to make memorization easy.
Listening: Students will listen to some short stories and songs related to the topics in the book.
Speaking: The Logati books are richly illustrated with visuals that help students describe and communicate their thoughts and feelings. In the class students will do conversation using new words and expressions.
Writing: Students will learn to write sentences and small paragraphs .
Vocabulary: The lessons include a variety of vocabulary based on reading comprehension and discussions covering each chapter and the use phrases and expressions such as ليت \ إنَّ \ إلاَّ . etc…
Grammar: Students will learn Arabic tenses ( past, present and imperative) and also how to write them in short form, demonstrative pronouns ( dual and plural ), difference between ( همزة الوصل والقطع ), colors/ feminine or masculine noun, synonyms, opposites and punctuation marks. .
They will learn how to ask questions and answer questions using the appropriate vocabulary and Arabic expressions.
